Ham Radio.

Ham (Amateur) Radio is a scientific hobby, friendship through communication, adventurous sport & second line of Communication when all other means of communication fails. HAM has become a unique tool in promoting global friendship.  Today there are thousands of hams who are enthusiastic about Ham Radio and use various methods to communicate with their counterparts around the world. Groups, individuals and educational institutions are all striving to acquire radio technology, as they are eager to improve their skill over a wide spectrum of fields. They operate their wireless transceivers (a combined unit of radio transmitter and receiver)

Amateur radio  is the use of designated radio frequency spectrum for purposes of private recreation, non-commercial exchange of messages, wireless experimentation, self-training, and emergency communication. The term "amateur" is used to specify persons interested in radio technique solely with a personal aim and without direct pecuniary interest, and to differentiate it from commercial broadcasting, public safety (such as police and fire), or professional two-way radio services (such as maritime, aviation, taxis, etc.).

The amateur radio service (amateur service and amateur satellite service) is established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) through the International Telecommunication Regulations. National governments regulate technical and operational characteristics of transmissions and issue individual stations licenses with an identifying call sign. Prospective amateur operators are tested for their understanding of key concepts in electronics and the host government's radio regulations. Radio amateurs use a variety of voice, text, image, and data communications modes and have access to frequency allocations throughout the RF spectrum to enable communication across a city, region, country, continent, the world, or even into space.

The reason why an amateur radio operator is called a 'ham' is not known. Some relate these three letters (HAM) to the names of three great radio experimenters. They are- Hertz (who practically demonstrated the existence of electromagnetic waves in 1888), Armstrong (who developed a resonant oscillator circuit for radio frequency work) and Marconi (the 1909 Nobel laureate in Physics, who in the year 1901 established the first transatlantic radio contact). Another speculation is that the word “HAM” stands for “Help All Mankind” as reflected in its service towards people in distress during natural calamities, disasters and civil emergencies.!!

Each amateur radio station has its own unique “name” allotted by the authorities. In amateur radio, the unique name assigned to a ham radio station and its owner helps you to know its operator as well as the country to which belongs. This particular ham radio station is authorized to be operated by that and the owner of that particular station is physically present during the operation. A call sign like VU2BRU may exist in India VU2 represents country code and BRU represents individual code. Each country has its own prefix.

What radio-amateurs (HAMs) do?

  • Set up and operate own Ham (Amateur) Radio station at affordable cost.

  • Communicate with other Hams located globally. i.e. 300+ countries to develop global friendship.

  • Provide communication during events like ASIAN GAMES, NATIONAL GAMES, MAJOR FESTIVALS, MOTOR SPORTING RALLIES Etc.,

  • Assemble your own radio and conduct scientific experiments.

  • Provide Ham Communication network during Natural Calamities like Earth-quake, Floods, Cyclones, Major accidents, fire etc.

  • Participate in the adventurous Radio Sports (Radio Direction Finding – RDF)

  • Participate in various Radio Contests for numerous achievement National and International awards.

  • Great famous hams are from different interest like actor Amitha Bachan, Ex prime minister Rajiv Gandhi,  astronaut Sunitha Williams.

Why be a Ham?

  • Radio is fun

  • Radio is not expensive

  • Radio is a great hobby

  • You can help in disasters

  • You can talk for free to people around the world

  • New friends can help you get jobs

But isn’t a cell phone better?

  • Cell phones cost per minute to use

  • If you’re not within 10 miles of a highway, your service can be bad

  • Ham can get you new friends with common interests

  • In emergencies, cell phones are busy or not functional (in Tsunami- and hurricane-ravaged areas, only hams can communicate!)

But isn’t the internet better?

  • Internet lets you leave a message when they are asleep. (But you can do that too with ham packets)

  • Many foreign hams don’t have computers.

  • Can be used while camping or sailing!

  • Can be used in power outages or in emergencies

  • No monthly charges

  • Can be linked to computers

  • Morse code is a universal language (QST)

  • Meet new people with similar interests without dangers of chat room

Greetings from Mangalore: The Cradle of Banking Excellence

Hello from Mangalore! You've probably heard in quizzes that the cradle of banking is nothing but Dakshina Kannada or Mangaluru. Mangalor...
